Custom Prescription Skincare

Most Americans associate skin troubles with the teenage years. But, the fact is the skin issues we deal with simply change over time. Acne certainly plagues teenagers, but adult acne is a problem for many people well past their teenage years. Other issues arise with time, triggered by lifestyle, pregnancy, aging and hormonal changes. Each individual’s skin has a different life history behind it. With that history comes specific needs. Sometimes even good skincare with over-the-counter products fail to produce the desired results. In a search for the best skincare products, more and more patients are turning to customized skincare. These products cost a fraction of what the top face creams are. They also deliver a customized result that you can’t get with a different cream.

What is Custom or Prescription Skincare?

Customized skincare is just what it sounds like. They are skincare products custom-made to meet your needs, and the unique nature and type of your skin. At the Living Young Center for Health and Anti-Aging, our goal is to help you achieve your best possible skin, both in health and appearance, through custom-made skincare products. Our medical professionals will meet with you to discuss your goals, current skincare regimen, and health history. We will discuss which over-the-counter or prescription products you have used in the past and how that has worked for you. Based on that discussion and a physical exam of your skin, our team will create a prescription skin cream designed to specifically meet your needs.

Common Adult Skin Conditions

Here are some examples of the skin conditions we commonly see in adults and examples of the prescription medications we use to treat them.

Adult Acne

While acne is rampant among teenagers, it continues to plague many adults. Over-the-counter treatments that simply dry out oil in a spot-treatment may not work on adult skin. Retinoids are a great option for treating adult acne. Retinoids were approved by the FDA in 1971, so they have a solid track record for acne treatment. Retinoids work by exfoliating your skin, which means removing the outer layer of skin cells. Some people using retinoids experience uncomfortable side effects such as redness, tightness, peeling, and swelling, especially in the first few weeks of use. Our staff may suggest that you start off by applying the cream every other night, then work up to a daily application.

For patients who simply cannot tolerate retinoids, products containing salicylic acid or alpha-hydroxy acid can be a great alternative. These treatments also exfoliate the skin. While you may see over-the-counter products containing these treatments, our custom skin creams contain higher levels only available with a prescription.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Retinoids are not just a great treatment for acne. Clinical studies have demonstrated how well they reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Talk to our team if you are concerned about fine lines or wrinkles.

Commonly known as the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma often occurs with pregnancy, the use of birth control pills, or other hormonal changes. It produces dark, hyperpigmented spots on the face, especially the forehead. Prescription-strength hydroquinone, a skin-lightening agent, can reduce the appearance of these spots.
