Botox® is one of the most popular, non-surgical methods available for eliminating facial wrinkles. Wrinkles on the face are caused by using certain muscles in a consistent pattern over a long period of time, such as squinting and frowning. By the time we are 30 or 40, these wrinkles are well-established. Botox (and its equivalent Xeomin) does its job of eliminating wrinkles by making the underlying facial muscles unable to contract. Without muscle contraction, wrinkles can’t form. It’s that simple.
Xeomin® is a competitive product made by Merz Pharmaceuticals. Xeomin (pronounced ZEE-o-min) is comparable to Botox in every way and is just as effective in getting rid of those glabellar and forehead lines and crow’s feet. They both do an equally great job in relaxing the muscles that create wrinkles. The chief difference between them is in their chemical composition. Xeomin is “naked” … that is, it is made without additives, whereas Botox is compounded with various protein molecules.
Jeuveau® Jeuveau is one of the newest injectable treatments available today (also marketed at #Newtox). The formula is very similar to that of BOTOX in how it performs and how long it lasts, typically 3-5 months. Jeuveau was developed strictly for cosmetic use, whereas BOTOX is used to treat a wide range of conditions. If you love the results of Botox, you will love the same results with Jeuveau.
Which one should I choose?
We get asked this all the time! These three products are very similar in many ways, they can all acheive the task of giving you less wrinkles and smoother skin. Botox has been around for a very long time and for a long time the only option like it on the market. New products like Xeomin and then more recently Jeuveau are now available. Having no additives, Xeomin may lessen a client’s likelihood of developing antibodies because it was made without added preservative-like ingredients and is more “pure”. So in that sense, Xeomin has an advantage over Botox and Jeuveau. Otherwise, they are quite comparable. They are mixed and measured in the same units, injection methods are the same and the results are comparable. Many of our clients have switched to Xeomin because they feel it “works in” faster and some are reporting results that last longer. Some patients try Jeuvea and prefer that one.
Everyone is different, so it is not uncommon for patients to try the different products out and see if they have a preference. More often, patients love all of them and go with the one that might be on sale at that time, and we’re cool with that 🙂
What is a treatment like?
Getting rid of your wrinkles is a lot easier than you might imagine. Actually, the process is very simple. At your appointment, you will consult with our clinician to discuss the results you want to achieve. He/she will examine your facial muscles to determine the number of Botox/ Xeomin units required to achieve your desired results.
There is both an art and a science to these injections and our clinicians combine skill with careful artistry to ensure our clients get exactly the results they seek. Our clinicians are highly qualified and are scrupulous about maintaining a natural look. Although our clinicians are very good at gauging exactly the proper amount to use for specific results, they’d rather use too little than too much. More can always be added. The goal is to achieve younger-looking faces that look perfectly natural. New clients can feel confident in trusting the judgment and skills of our clinicians.
Using a micro-fine needle, the Botox is injected directly into the muscle that underlies the dynamic wrinkle. It feels like a small pinprick with a little stinging. If you experience any discomfort, an ice pack may be applied. The entire process takes about 15 minutes.
There is no downtime. It is considered a “lunch hour” procedure, meaning you may resume your normal day immediately. However, patients are advised to wait 24 hours before taking part in any strenuous activity. Also, you should avoid lying down for four to five hours following the treatment and to avoid massaging the treated area.
What areas can be treated?Botox (or Xeomin) is most commonly used to erase forehead wrinkles, the glabellar lines (those lines between the eyes), and crows’ feet. Botox is also used on chin creases, the neck line, and for smile lift and eyebrow lift. A not so well-known use for Botox is to combat hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating). In many cases, clients enjoy relief from hyperhidrosis for up to two years after treatment.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
Typically Botox and Jeuveau takes 5 to 12 days for the full effect. In some cases, it may take up to two weeks before the treated muscles become relaxed enough to see results. With Xeomin, because it has that one less additive, you can expect to see results sooner, between 2-6 days. When accurately diluted, and properly administered, you can expect your Botox, Xeomin or Jeuveau to last from 3 to 5 months. Effects wear off gradually over time, so there is no sudden change in your appearance. When you look in the mirror and see your lines re-appearing returning, that’s when you know it’s time for more! To maintain consistent good looks, plan to get treatment 3-4 times a year.
Q and A
Millions of people routinely use Botox/ Xeomin. It is one of the fastest and safest ways to eliminate facial wrinkles and no long-term side effects have emerged. Although our clinicians are very skilled in this procedure, sometimes small red dots and/or bruises may occur at the injection site for clients. If so, they will fade within a few hours to days on their own, but in the meantime foundation can be used for concealment. Application of Arnica (available at LivingYoung Center) may also speed resolution of bruises.
As with most other purchases, you get what you pay for with Botox. You’ve all seen those ads offering Botox for unbelievably low prices. How do they do it? Some practitioners may over-dilute Botox with a saline solution to do more treatments with less product. But the results are less-effective and shorter-lasting. At LivingYoung Center, you will always get the proper dosage of these products (Botox, Xeomin and Jeuveau) diluted to the exact specifications of the manufacturer. We don’t take any short-cuts when it comes to your appearance or your satisfaction. Botox, Xeomin and Jeuveau are sold by the unit at $11 per unit. Women usually require fewer units per treatment area than men. The following table will give you an idea of the “average” number of units required per treatment area.
Average # of Botox or Xeomin units
|Area||# of units
|Glabellar Frown Lines||20||$220|
|Upper Lip Lines||4||$44|
