Sculptra is an injectable biostimulator made of of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and has been around in the Aesthetic Medicine world for a long time, since it was FDA approved in 2004. Sculptra has a liquid consistency and is injected underneath the skin. Once injected, Sculptra incorporates into the tissues and stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen to plump areas of lost volume that occurs with aging and/or weight loss. What is the difference between filler and Sculptra?
Both dermal fillers and Sculptra are designed to address lost volume, fine lines, folds and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injectable gels designed to hold their shape in the form of a gel-like substance. The effects of dermal filler are apparent immediately, whereas the effects of Sculptra happens gradually since it takes time for the body to build collagen. Since your body has rebuilt its own collagen, the results of Sculptra last longer than dermal fillers, with a longevity of 2-5 years.
When should I start getting Sculptra?
Due to the aging process, environmental stressors, and our genetic predisposition, we suffer from loss of collagen at a rate of about 1% annually after the age of 20. Loss of collagen leads to thinning of skin which results in the formation of wrinkles and folds. Collagen is a fibrous protein in the deep dermal layer that gives our skin structural support and helps to maintain shape, moisture, and elasticity of the skin. A healthy supply of collagen is the source of smooth skin and a youthful appearance. The recommend starting age varies, but it has been popular with adults as young as in their 20’s to prevent/slow down aging of the skin.

SCULPTRA: RECOVERY & AFTERCARE
Sculptra is a very safe procedure with minimal post-treatment side effects, such as itching, swelling, redness, and bruising around the treatment areas. The side effects are mild and tolerable, so you can resume your daily activities and work immediately — no downtime. While you can resume most of your daily activities, you should avoid strenuous workouts and direct sunlight for a few days.
SCULPTRA: RESULTS & LONGEVITY
Sculptra results start showing approximately 4 weeks after treatment and continue to build gradually over 3-6 months. In some cases, the results might also continue improving for a year after treatment. You can expect the overall results to last for 2-5 years, in which maintenance is recommended annually to continue indefinitely.
HOW MUCH DOES SCULPTRA COST?
The number of vials and treatments varies so a consultation is recommended to give you more accurate pricing. However, in general, most people need 1 vial of Sculptra per decade of life. So, for example, if you are 40 years old, you will need approximately 4 vials, which are split up between several appointments, which are spaced 4-6 weeks apart. However, the amount also varies according to the area(s) being treated.
