Lip enhancements through injections can improve the contour, texture, and fullness of your lips. Dermal fillers can augment the volume of your lips. If you’re new to lip fillers, you may have questions about the guidelines and precautions associated with them.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are dermal filler injectables that provide plump, even, smooth lips. Lip filler is a minimally invasive treatment for smoothing lip lines, enhancing volume, and creating symmetry and shape within the lips. Four types of dermal filler injectables are approved by the FDA, including hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, ply-L-lactic acid, and polymethylmethacrylate beads within cow collagen.

What to do After Lip Fillers?

Ice

Applying covered ice or an ice pack to the lips may minimize side effects and speed up recovery after the treatment. Applying ice after lip injections helps ease any pain, swelling, bruising, or itching you may experience after the procedure.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water and eating hydrating fruits and vegetables will help your body heal quicker. Staying hydrated and avoiding excess sodium keeps the skin healthy.

Sleep With Your Head Elevated

Sleeping with your head on a pillow is essential to reduce excess swelling in the lips. Sleeping with your head elevated also helps ensure that you have even lips after the injection. Sleeping face down can increase the chances of migration occurring within the lips.

What NOT to Do After Lip Fillers

Wear Lip Makeup

Avoiding lip makeup after the procedure helps to keep the filler injection sites clean and free from irritation. It is best to avoid lip makeup for 24 hours after the treatment.

Drink From a Straw

Using a straw after receiving lip filler is not recommended because it can cause the filler to shift from the original position. This may also cause added bruising and swelling on the lips. It is recommended that you avoid using a straw for 24 hours.

Exercise

You should avoid strenuous exercise and high heat for up to 48 hours after receiving lip filler. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate can worsen swelling and bruising on the lips. High heat in saunas, exercise classes, and steam rooms can make swelling more noticeable.
